A dramatic monument to Saladin was erected in Damascus in the twentieth century. Non-Muslims often suppose that there is a Koranic injunction against the depiction of the human form and personalities in art. In fact this is not so.

This famous image of Saladin, dating from about 1180, is attributed to an artist of the Fatimid school.

Built between 685 and 691, the Dome of the Rock, sometimes called the Mosque of Omar, is the earliest great architectural monument of Islam. Not in fact a mosque but a shrine, it was built to shelter the Rock, sacred to the memory of Muhammad. It is located on the Temple Mount, where was the Temple of Solomon, and it was here that the Christian Knights Templar made their headquarters. When Saladin recaptured Jerusalem for Islam in 1189 the building had to be ritually cleansed. Some 18 meters in diameter, the dome is a wooden structure, clad originally in lead, later in gold leaf, and resting on a drum supported by 16 columns and piers, surrounded by an octagonal arcade.
